My husband and I have made the best decision (or so we humans believe) to have our Golden Retriever Molly, front right leg amputated this week. Needless, I am anxious, scared, and on a roller coaster of emotion right now. Why is it we always second guess a decision? After a removal of the tumor just 3 short months ago, it is now growing again with a vengeance…so after consulting with our vet and the oncologist, the decision is to relieve her pain and remove her limb.
Can someone please offer support so I know that this is the right decision and not just one of a human wanting her loyal child Molly to just be better….
Welcome to the club nopawdy ever wants to join! You will find lots of support, feedback, success stories and support from members in the discussion forums. Or drop by the Live Chat and consider downloading the Tripawds e-books for fast answers to common concerns.
Of course you made the right decision! Molly’s pain will be gone. I don’t know your situation but it was clear to me that amputating my kitty Mona’s leg would save her life. I have not looked back and neither has Mona. Check in with others on the discussion forums (I think they are used more for general discussion) and post some photos of Molly here when you are up to it. All the best on surgery day!

You have come to the right llae, that’s for sure! We ALL understand the fear, panic, second guessing…did I mention fear? Yeah, think so!! Did I mention feeling like you are stuck in a nightmare? I actual k y scheduled an appointment for my Happy Hannah’s amputation and cancelled!!!
Remember, you are doing this FOR Molly, not TO Molly! Once recovery has taken place and thatnpainful leg is gone, Molly will have more sparkle than before!!!
Drat…computer starting to freeze up…will try and write more later…grrrr….

Yes, Welcome to the Family! Glad to know you, wish it was under different circumstances…
So many folks on this wonderful support site struggled like you did over this decision. I, on the other hand, never doubted that removing my boy’s leg was the best decision and could not get it off fast enough.
Regardless of where your mind is pre-amp, you are going to be amazed and relieved at how well Molly is going to do on 3 legs. Dogs really are totally amazing and I hope you find comfort in knowing that Molly is going to blow you away with how she handles it. Granted, there will be tough days in the first week or two, but once she gets over the initial hurdle there is no looking back.
Tripawds completely ROCK!!!
I will send healing thoughts Molly’s way, although I know she is going to do great!!
Hang in there!

This is a wonderful community with A LOT of folks willing to lend support and advice. Just remember you are doing this FOR Molly not TO Molly. This will alleviate pain that she’s been feeling which will increase her quality of life. Quality is more important than Quantity.
I’d also suggest posting in the Discussion Forums. You’ll receive a bigger response from members because the Blog posting cycle through so fast and people may not see it when they sign in.
And I’ll second Admin’s suggestion on the ebooks offered through this site. There is a ton of helpful info in them and they really helped me and my husband when our Leland had his amputation. I went through and printed everything off and put it in a binder so I could flip through and mark pages.
Anyway…I’ll be keeping dear Molly in my thoughts for her upcoming procedure and recovery.

The first few weeks are tough and you may question your decision at times but it is amazing how well these precious animal adjust. Our Rocky is a 4 year old boxer that was diagnosed last January with Osteosarcoma. The vet basically told us to keep him comfortable that he had about 4 months to live. We will celebrate his 1 year ampuversary on February 5th. He underwent 6 rounds of chemo and is doing remarkable with no signs of lung mets. We treasure each and every day that we have with him and were do it all over again. Best of luck to you and Molly. You will find great support through this site as I did at the time of diagnosis and still enjoy reading the newsletter every month.

I’m so sorry to hear about Molly. But as you can see we have a great community here who will put your fears to rest. At least as much as we can. It’s scary for sure but you will be amazed when you see how Molly deals with it. Dogs are SO much stronger than humans, she will rock your world with her ability to move on and enjoy life again. Hang in there and keep us posted. Thanks for blogging!
